What Is Brand Identity? A Plain Guide for Sri Lankan Business Owners
Ask ten business owners what brand identity means and you’ll get ten different answers. Some say it’s the logo. Some say it’s the colours on the shop sign. A few think it’s something only big companies need.
They’re all close, but none of them has the full picture. Brand identity is how your business looks and sounds to everyone who deals with it. This guide explains it in plain words, shows two real projects from our studio, and covers what brand identity design in Sri Lanka usually involves and costs.
So, what is brand identity?
Brand identity is everything you choose to show your customers so they can recognise you. Your logo, your colours, your fonts, the style of your photos, even the way you write a Facebook caption.
Think about a friend you know well. You can spot them across a busy road by the way they walk, and you’d know their voice on a bad phone line. A brand identity does the same job for a business. It lets people recognise you in a second, without reading the name.
People often mix up brand and brand identity, so here is the difference. Your brand is what customers think and feel about you. You can’t control that completely. Your brand identity is the part you can control. You design it, and over time it shapes what people think.
What is inside a brand identity?
Most brand identities are built from the same handful of parts.
Logo. The mark people see first. It can be a symbol, the business name in a styled font, or both together.
Colours. Usually two or three main colours and a neutral. People often remember a colour before they remember a name, so choose with care.
Fonts. One for headings and one for body text is plenty. Too many fonts make a business look scattered.
Image style. The mood of your photos, the kind of icons you use, any patterns or illustrations.
Voice. How you talk. Friendly and relaxed, or formal and exact? A tea seller and a law firm shouldn’t sound alike. If your customers read Sinhala, English or both, decide how the two languages sit together. It’s easier to settle that once than every time you print a banner.
Brand guide. A short document that writes the rules down: the exact colours, the fonts, how much space to leave around the logo, and what not to do. It keeps your brand looking the same when five different people are posting for you.
Brand identity, logo and branding: what’s the difference?

These three words get used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t.
Picture your business as a shop. The logo is the sign above the door. The brand identity is the sign, the paint, the shelves, the uniforms and the way staff greet people. Branding is running that shop every day and building a reputation over time.
A logo on its own is a good start. It just can’t carry a whole business by itself.
Why it matters for a business in Sri Lanka
Customers meet your business in lots of places before they ever speak to you. A Facebook page. A WhatsApp status. A shelf in a supermarket. A Google Maps listing. A board on the roadside. A business card handed over at a meeting. Each one is a small first impression.
When those places look like they belong together, people feel they are dealing with a business that has its act together. When each one looks different, they notice that too, even if they never say so.
A clear brand identity also saves you time. With a brand guide in hand, your printer, your staff or a freelancer can make something that looks right without calling you for every detail.
It helps when you grow, too. A second branch, a new product or your first export order is easier when the look is already settled. If you sell products, remember that packaging is often the very first thing a buyer sees, at home or abroad.
Two real examples
Ideas are easy to explain and harder to picture, so here are two projects we finished recently, and what we thought about on each.
AVOKAX: a logo for a web application
AVOKAX is a modern web application in the technology and SaaS space. People tend to judge software quickly, and they want it to feel clear before they’ve even used it. So we kept the design sharp and plain, with no decoration for decoration’s sake.

The wordmark uses angular letters that feel structured and confident. In the middle, a circular mark split between teal and deep indigo takes the place of the letter O. You can read it as a data point, a progress ring or a system in motion. It’s a simple shape, but there is a meaning behind it.
The colours were chosen on purpose. Deep blue brings trust and depth. The teal adds some energy without shouting.
The real test of an identity is whether it holds up in different places. We checked this one on app icons, browser tabs, business cards, a conference screen, a cap and a t-shirt. It stays sharp and easy to recognise on all of them.
What you can take from this: one simple idea, used the same way everywhere, works harder than ten clever ideas used once. See the AVOKAX project.
True Ceylon: logo and packaging for cinnamon
This brand sells true Ceylon cinnamon, as powder and as quills. We designed the logo and the canister packaging together. Both were inspired by Sri Lankan traditional art and cultural patterns. The look is warm and authentic, with some elegance and a modern packaging style, so the story of Ceylon cinnamon comes across in a simple way that’s easy to remember.

Why is this brand identity and not just a pretty tin? Because the logo, the patterns and the canister all come from the same idea. On a shelf, you see one product with one personality, instead of a label stuck onto a container.
It also gives the brand a look that belongs to it. Sri Lanka has a long tradition of art and pattern, and using it with care gives a local product something a foreign brand would struggle to copy. See the True Ceylon packaging project.
Two projects, two industries, the same lesson: pick one idea that fits the business and repeat it everywhere the customer sees you.
How a brand identity gets built

At Gavi Digital we work in six steps. Here they are in plain words.
- Brief. You tell us about your business, your customers and what you want.
- Educate. We give you honest advice on style and direction.
- Discover. We look at your market, your audience and your competitors.
- Sketch. We draw rough ideas first, before anything is polished.
- Design and revision. We refine the best idea with your feedback.
- Deliver. You get the final files, ready for print and digital use.
A clear brief makes everything faster. If you’ve never written one, our guide on how to write a logo design brief will help.
A logo usually takes 3 to 7 days. A full brand launch kit usually takes 5 to 10 days. It depends on how many rounds of changes you need.
How much does brand identity design cost in Sri Lanka?
Prices change from studio to studio, and they depend on how many concepts you get, how many revision rounds are included and how many items you need. Here are our starting prices at Gavi Digital:
| Package | Starting price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Logo design | From LKR 25,000 | A custom logo for your brand |
| Logo with brand guide | From LKR 50,000 | Logo plus a brand guide covering fonts, colours and logo use |
| Brand launch kit | From LKR 85,000 | Logo, brand guide, social media cover and profile images, business card, letterhead, and print-ready files |
The brand launch kit also comes with full ownership rights and is ready for the trademark registration process. Prices can change without notice, so check before you decide. You can see the details on our brand identity design page and our brand launch kit page.
When you compare quotes, don’t look at price alone. Ask what files you receive, how many revisions are included, and who owns the final design.
Mistakes we see all the time
Copying a competitor. It feels safe, but customers can’t tell you apart, and you start the race behind.
Changing colours and fonts every few weeks. Each change resets the memory people have of you. Pick a look and stay with it.
Skipping the brand guide. Without one, every new poster drifts a little further from the last.
Using a blurry logo saved from WhatsApp. We’ve all seen it on a banner. Keep the proper files and send those.
Not owning your files. Ask for the source files, and ask for ownership to be confirmed in writing.
Choosing only on price. A cheap identity that you have to redo in a year costs more in the end.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between brand identity and a logo?
A logo is one part of your brand identity. The identity also includes colours, fonts, image style, voice and the brand guide that holds them together.
How much does brand identity design cost in Sri Lanka?
At Gavi Digital, a logo starts from LKR 25,000, a logo with a brand guide from LKR 50,000, and a full brand launch kit from LKR 85,000. These are starting prices and can change.
How long does it take?
A logo usually takes 3 to 7 days. A brand launch kit usually takes 5 to 10 days, depending on revisions.
Does a small business really need a brand guide?
If more than one person will ever make something for your business, yes. Even a one-page guide with your colours, fonts and logo rules saves arguments and rework.
Will I own my brand design files?
With us, yes. You get full ownership rights and print-ready files in EPS, AI and PDF, and the design is ready for the trademark registration process. The registration itself is filed by you or your lawyer.
Can I change my brand identity later?
Yes. Businesses refresh their look all the time as they grow. The best changes keep what customers already recognise. If you’re curious how a very large brand handled it, we wrote about KFC’s global rebrand.
